As reported earlier, 71-year-old Sumitra Mahajan has been unanimously elected as the Speaker of 16th Lok Sabha after motion moved by PM Narendra Modi and seconded by BJP patriarch LK Advani while voice vote was called by pro tem speaker Kamalnath. After 13 Similar motions were moved and seconded by several other parties- ruling, opposition, Sumitra is declared as Speaker of lower house. She assumed the office with grace and thanked members for electing her unanimously.

Sumitra Mahajan holds many records to her credit. Presently, sitting MP from Indore, Sumitra is the longest-serving woman MP (eight-term member of Parliament). Sumitra is the second lady to be presiding officer of Lok Sabha after her predecessor Meira Kumar.
