On Monday, the common High Court of the Telugu states situated at Hyderabad served notices to all the 20 YSRCP MLAs of Andhra Pradesh, who defected into Telugu Desam Party (TDP).

The High Court’s action was a response to the petition filed by YSRCP MLA Vishweshwar Reddy seeking disqualification of the 20 defected MLAs. The petitioner alleged that Speaker, who was supposed to act neutral and take action against the defected MLAs, was acting as ruling party agent.

Although the Advocate General argued that the petition could not be admitted when the issue was pending at the Supreme Court, the High Court was not convinced. As a result, the 20 MLAs, who won the elections on YSRCP ticket and later migrated to TDP, were provided four weeks to come up with an explanation. The next hearing will take place after four weeks.

Since numerous cases are pending across the nation over defected leaders, the Supreme Court is reportedly planning to make stern anti-defection laws.
