Ever since he came to power in 2014, AP CM Nara Chandrababu Naidu has been determined to make the state energy efficient. In the process, he got rid of the age-old sodium-vapor bulbs and paved red carpet to LED street lighting across the state.
In these 4 years, the Babu-led AP government has installed close to 20 lakh LED street lights in the urban and rural areas across the state, with another 10 lakh ready to be installed. This move proved beneficial to the state ex-chequer saving Rs 500 crore, and energy savings of 333 MU in the next decade.
On the other hand, the state is on the verge of setting a new world record for highest number of LED lights installation. Andhra Pradesh rules the list of Indian states with highest number of LED lights, followed by other major states like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh.
LED (Light Emitting Diode) lights are more energy efficient compared to the conventional street lights. They produce the same or higher amount of luminance using half the power than traditional lights. LED lights are longer lasting and produce less heat and give better color rendering.
