According to the Indian Institute for Human Settlements report to Sivaramakrishnan Committee, Krishna district topped the ranks. The data provided based on Regional Development Index shows Krishna district as the best performer and Visakhapatnam is second to Krishna district. Guntur is placed as third in the list followed by East Godavari and West Godavari districts.

Anantapur, Srikakulam and Vizianagaram are trailing behind in the list. The report spotted that Guntur and Nellore have low water risks. Based on the availability of lands, the report cited Nellore, Visakhapatnam and Kadapa as the best places as they have abundant government lands. However, Prakasam option has been ruled out as there is acute water crisis in the region.

On the connectivity index, Vijayawada, Guntur and Kakinada scores high. Krishna and Guntur, Visakhapatnam and East Godavari, and Nellore have been the three bundle of districts that performed well. Report cited that large amounts of ‘wasteland’ is located Rayalaseema and South Coastal Andhra regions.

Weighing on earthquake index, Tirupati, Nellore, Ongole, Guntur, Vijayawada, Rajahmundry and Kakinada are at average to moderate risk. All these factors say Vijayawada is likely the best option to be the capital for Andhra Pradesh.

“Even the Sivaramakrishnan Committee is not totally against to Vijayawada as capital but it is only “opposing” to the proposal as it has insufficient government lands. If State government could come up with alternative plan to meet this need, it could opt for setting up capital between Vijayawada  and Guntur,” said top source in the know. We hear that Chandra Babu Naidu is adamant on setting up capital between Vijayawada and Guntur as he feels it’s the ideal location. However, he is also keen on developing other regions on par with Vijayawada, Guntur.
