India’s Mars Mission Mangalyan’s success hurt the ego of many foreign nations. It is known that the moment India announced its Mission Mars, many in foreign media made fun of India, saying how can a poor nation spend so much money on mars mission with out providing proper facilities to the poor.
Now a popular US daily, The New York Times published a cartoon on Monday on India’s Mars Mission which hurt the feelings of the people. Heng Kim Song, the Singapore cartoonist intends to show that space exploration is no longer the exclusive domain of rich, Western countries.
However he used highly provocative, racial images. Readers blasted the cartoonist for the cartoon and The New York Times came in for severe criticism. The management after noticing readers feelings tendered unconditional apology saying it never intended to ‘impugn India, its government or its citizens’.
The New York Times cartoon showed a farmer, accompanied by a cow, knocking on the door of the Elite Space Club where two men sit reading a newspaper which has India’s space mission on the front page.
