Although several names including BJP veteran LK Advani’s name popped up some time back, Modi seems to have other plans on his mind. The latest name doing the rounds in BJP circles is sitting Indore MP-eight time MP Sumitra Mahajan. Other senior BJP leaders Arun Shourie, Rajiv Prathap Rudy and Murali Manohar Joshi, who were kept out of the Cabinet, is hopeful on getting Defecne Ministry sooner or later. Meanwhile, Union Urban Development Minister Venkaiaha Naidu made it clear that new Speaker would be elected on June 6. Let’s wait and see whether Modi has any other surprises for people of India.
Now that Narendra Modi has taken charge as the 15th Prime Minister of India and appointed his own cabinet, all focus has been shifted to the “much tough job”- Lok Sabha Speaker post. Normally, non-controversial and non-political candidates be given preference as the Speaker and the one who has good relation with all leaders cutting across the political parties. Earlier Somnath Chatterjee from CPM and Meira Kumar from Congress served as Speakers in UPA I, UPA II respectively. While Somnath did the pretty good job in a balanced way, Meira has courted several controversies and had to face to many allegations. The worst among them was the “blackout” of Lok Sabha telecast while passing of crucial, controversial Telangana Bill. Meira had been alleged of biasing while suspending Seemandhra MPs from house when the significant Bill related to their State was being discussed. Following this, many social activists went onto question the credibility of Meira Kumar and few even blamed her for marring the post.
