The demise of Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa has not just plunged the state into a sea of sadness but also pushed the supporters of ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) into pandemonium. Many wonder if the party can survive without Amma?

It may be recalled that when the party’s founder MG Ramachandran died in 1987, people and supporters of party alike had the similar question in their minds. It took four long years for the AIADMK to resolve the tussle between MGR’s legal wife Janaki and Jaya to become the political heir of MGR. Being a celluloid starlet like MGR, Jayalalithaa found similar veneration from public and she ably filled MGR’s void in the party.

Sadly, there is no such charismatic leader to succeed Amma now. Panneerselvam, who was often dubbed as a puppet of Amma, has already sworn in as the new CM. But, political analysts opine that the future of AIADMK looks uncertain in the absence of a capable leader to fill into Jayalalithaa’s shoes.

Now, if we observe the ruling regional parties in many states, one thing is common, there is no worthy successor to the supreme leaders. Similar chaos and attempts of coup can be expected if, for any reason, the top most leader, has to step aside.

The present and the next couple of years of AIADMK could be a lesson to all such regional parties to start having a strategy regarding successors.
