Central Government on Monday approved 3 new Airports in Andhra Pradesh. The presence of senior TDP leader Ashok Gajapathi Raju as the Civil Aviation Minister has eased things for Andhra Pradesh.

The Steering Committee on Greenfield airports, headed by the Secretary, Civil Aviation (MoCA), Government of India, has given green signal for Bhogapuram Airport and two other airports at Dagadarthi (Nellore) and Orvakallu (Kurnool). The Committee also recommended for ‘site clearance’ to the Kothagudem airport in Telangana. Hence, Telangana is getting its second Greenfield airport after Hyderabad International airport.

The international airport at Bhogapuram in Vizianagaram district will be constructed by the AP State Government under PPP mode at an estimated cost of Rs 2200 crore to serve about 6.3 million passengers every year. The state government has already acquired the land needed for developing Bhogapuram Airport and plan is underway to begin the construction next year. This new airport is expected to ease the passenger traffic at Visakhapatnam airport.

The other two airports in AP will be developed as domestic No-Frills airports with a cost of Rs 88 crores each. The airport at Dagadarthi will be developed under PPP mode and the Orvakallu airport will be developed by State Government only. The clearances are expected to enhance the aviation infrastructure facilities in the two Telugu states and boost the Regional Connectivity.
