Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar has issued a strong warning to Telangana Multi System Operators (MSOs) over the blockage of telecast of channels TV9, ABN Andhra Jyothi in the State. Minister said that if MSOs won’t heed to government, he warned of stern action including cancellation of all the licenses of MSOs.
Government has ordered MSOs to regularise the telecast of banned channels TV9, ABN Andhra Jyothi immediately by Monday. Mr Javadekar made it clear that the government is committed to safeguard the freedom of expression, freedom of press, he ruled out any interference in the matters of its functioning. However, Javadekar said government wanted “self-mechanisms” to maintain accountability, responsibility. He asserted that press is independent and MSOs, which carry channels, cannot resort to any censorship. This is certainly a sigh of relief to the managements of TV9, ABN who lost a major chunk of revenue with the ban.
