There are reports that the state government of Andhra Pradesh is not too keen when it comes to persuading the Union civil aviation ministry for allotting additional funds to upgrade the existing Gannavaram airport. This is because CM Chandrababu Naidu is reportedly toying with the idea of developing a brand new one under public-private partnership (PPP) mode.

However, the government is planning to consider the airport aspect only after sorting out the current thorny land pooling issue for the proposed new capital city. Meanwhile, the Gannavaram airport runway would be widened by AAI to 10,500 ft from the existing 7,500 ft. At the same time since any sudden spurt in air traffic is unlikely, the Gannavaram airport would be able to handle the capital city rush for at least one more decade.

Meanwhile, political circles are now abuzz with news that a new international airport might be coming up near Tadikonda, near the capital city, for serving its needs. Whether it is true or just another ploy by the realtors to hike the land prices is something to be verified.
