Union Government of India acted swiftly to ban airing of Nirbhaya documentary filmed by BBC and NDTV as a tribute to women on Womens Day on March 8. However BBC blatantly defied orders and went ahead and aired the highly controversial documentary in its International channel yesterday.

Government served legal notice to the channel for airing the documentary and asked its video sharing website YouTube to remove the documentary. But it is coming out that the damage has been done as YouTube links are working even after Government order.

Many right thinking people felt that BBC which prides itself practising and preaches high moral media values breached and flouted them for mere TRP ratings.

At the start of the document itself it claims that contrary to its terms and conditions, documentary has graphical depiction of rape, which is illegal according to British law too. However some cheerleaders of BBC in India continue supporting BBC saying that the channel couldn’t do anything wrong.

Father of Nirbhaya too cried foul and threatened legal action against the filmmaker Leslee Udwin, for naming his daughter’s name and even showing her photo in the documentary.

Many question how BBC flouted these norms and broke all rules fully aware that naming of rape victims is a crime according to British law. Leslee Udwin even boldly warned that India with its restrictions is defying freedom of speech and expression which nations across the world will view seriously and take strict action.
