Paddy fields and fruit orchards which were spread over thousands of acres, and long stretches of roads in the north coastal Andhra and East Godavari districts were reportedly damaged in the heavy rains and winds due to cyclone Hudhud on Sunday.
With heavy destruction of the basic infrastructure in the region, media reports say that industrial production and business transactions were severely hit and given the fact that electricity is unlikely to be restored in the next few days, officials fear much more losses. Although the state government has only just started estimating the total loss, it is expected that the total losses would be least Rs 10,000 crore.
AP CM Chandrababu Naidu has reportedly sought an ad hoc relief package. This includes Rs. 2,000 crore from the centres even as the total extent of damage would be known only in next few weeks. For now, the authorities are waiting for the storm to subside which is already happening.
